Quentin then handed in a personal letter to The Prime Minister calling on him to scrap the massive Fuel Duty hike planned for April and to bring in measures to lower and stabilise the price of fuel. Other members of the FairFuelUK team carried a giant banner calling the Chancellor to have a heart on Valentine’s Day.
Quentin said, ‘Pulling the truck by hand was a symbol of the enormous suffering and problems being inflicted on people and the economy. If the April Fuel Duty hike goes ahead it could add 20 pence a gallon to prices which are already at record levels. This risks tipping Britain into a double dip recession.’
Quentin was joined by representatives of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) that between them represent over 20,000 UK road freight companies. Adrian Tink of the RAC was present to represent the 7 million members of the RAC.
Theo de Pencier of the FTA said:
"Today was about demonstrating to the Government the struggle businesses are facing in respect of unsustainable fuel price increases. If the Government listens to reason then they could hand businesses up and down the country an invaluable lifeline by urgently reviewing this escalating fuel duty policy and scrapping the rise planned for April."
Geoff Dunning of the RHA re-enforced the message. “If April’s duty increase goes ahead it will cause irreparable damage to an economy that is already desperately trying to recover from the onslaught of a recession. Quite simply, this cannot be allowed to happen”.
The FairFuelUK campaign is backed by thousands of businesses and tens of thousands of members of the public. Campaign organiser Peter Carroll said, ‘We are deluged with support but are calling on everyone who is angry or concerned about high fuel prices to sign the on line petition at www.fairfueluk.com
