An apprentice from Worcestershire has been granted his HGV licence at the age of eighteen.

Harry Hoult, who works for an HGV maintenance company in Stourport-on-Severn, is one of the youngest people in the country to pass the tests.

He took a part-time job with the company while still at school, and has since started an apprenticeship at the North East Worcestershire College.

Harry has only recently passed his ordinary driving test.

"It's something to be proud of - I'm just happy." he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

Safety checks

He says the examination for the HGV licence was very rigorous, involving both theory and practical tests:

"I've done my theory test for ropes, hazard perception, all my Highway Code, then the practical driving test at Wolverhampton."

Dean Livingstone, the Director of Costin Commercial, said it was a real achievement to be granted a Certificate of Professional Competency at such a young age:

"The new legislation for the drivers, the Certificate of Professional Competence, is to make sure the driver is competent to take out a loaded vehicle.

"(It covers) anything from illegal immigrants, safety of the vehicle checks, your driving hours - anything that relates to driving safely."
