Scania Opticruise 3 Years, 6 Months ago Karma: 1
Hi Guys-Newbie here,so be gentle!!!

Want to pick your collective brains about something.....

We have just recently got a fleet of brand new scania opticruises. When selecting drive,it always selects 1st gear and then you have to paddle it up to 4th to get a decent gear to pull away in(unless youre climbing the side of a very tall building!!). Now heres the question, how can I set the gearbox to automatically select 4th instead of 1st?. I know it can be done as the trainer fron Scania said its possible but wont tell us mere mortal drivers how to do it!!

So i thought I would come on here and ask!!!

Cheers!

Welcome to the site Joe.

The only thing to do with a Scanny is drive it in to a river then get in a Volvo.

In my very humble opinion.

Sorry chap, couldn't resist. I don't know but someone else might.

We only have 1 volvo in the whole fleet and thats only because scanny dont make a full automatic!

One of the drivers had a bad motorbike accident and can now only drive a full automatic!

We just got them on Monday and scanny apparently promised they would get 12-13 mpg. The best we have had so far is between 7-8 mpg. I know the engines take time to loosen up but still............

ahh that wonder full scania promise of beter mpg youll get no where near 12-13 theyd have been better buying manuals

best thing to do either use manual mode or let it do its own thing and leave it alone

The ones I have driven defaulted to 2nd. Someone did show me how to do it but I can't remember how

I'm sure it's in the manual though or just ring your dealer

As far as fuel consumption goes, they can do well but you do need to help them

First and most important is when approaching a bank on the motorway when heavy Manual it down to 11th. 12th is an over drive and 11th is direct top so you'll do better than trying to let it lug down in both speed and fuel You'll notice that it will still be just in the green in 11th at limiter

Secondly do not let it do the down shifting when slowing down. Every time it down shifts it revs to match cog speed and that sucks unneccesary juice considering your only slowing down anyway and the engine braking it creates takes momentum and energy from you. If your just slowing to the lights or roundabout or whatever drop the clutch and coast until you hit the speed you need then lift the clutch and it'll pick the right cog for you

Hope that makes sense. It needs a little practice but you'll find you get way better MPG and make faster progress.
I still do not understand why companies buy new motors and then don't bother training the driver on them

Thanks Montanaman!

The trucks came with the manuals removed to stop us peasants fiddling about when we get bored!!

Its just like everything else - after a while it will be second nature!

Still miss my gearstick for resting my hand on!!!

Your welcome Joe and welcome to OLT by the way

I know what you mean about the handrest
Your left hand just flails around looking for a perch until you begin to feel like you've had a stroke

Why don't all Opticruise models have an armrest I wonder ???

Slush boxes, Ok start it up,engage auto, foot on clutch, engage hill mode, ( H ), paddle up or down to gear you want to select as starting gear, 456 ok when empty, normaly, switch back to nuetral, release clutch and dash SHOULD say gear 5, or whatever you selected START and flash a few times. Job done, stick it into auto and off you go!
Then whenever you are rolling move it into manual and overide it all the time cause they are crap! Great promises of amazing miles per gallon but tyre wear will be horrendous as they spin on every round about and junction, just watch how often the traction control light comes on! They can do great burn outs though ! oops did I really say that ?
