OK Pete, or anyone who knows.

I'm supposed to have up to 8 meg on my connection with TalkTalk. Recently I checked my broadband speed on several of the sites that test it and on all of them it said my speed was less than half a meg. My connection also has a tendency to drop off on a fairly regular basis and the latest incident, today, I couldn't connect for well over an hour.

I managed to find this all about the exchange I'm connected to. It doesn't say on there but I am just over 1.3 km away. I see it serves nearly 30000 properties, and at that distance I must be as far away from it as it is possible to be.

One question.

Can I do anything at all to improve the connection and/or speed ?

Looks like your on the long end of the pipe there. Also if you are paying for a 8Mb package and not getting that speed at all. Then you really should take it up with your ISP. If they can't supply the rated speed then they should downgrade your payment plan.

Go to http://www.speedtest.net and tell me the score that you get. Also when you do this try more then one test server as some server give different results.


And if all else fails. Try and switch to a cable broadband ISP like Virgin Media.

Switching to another ISP that still uses a BT phone line system will not change the speed you will get. It will only change the price of the same line and who the bill comes from.
