I went in to Pikangikum on Monday night with 3 other trucks. This was supposed to be the last of the year as the roads were giving out fast. We were lucky as the night was cold so we got in by 11pm and were all pulling out by 11am and homeward bound.
This was the view from the lakeshore on Tuesday morning, April fools day of course!!
Wednesday morning, I was just building up the energy to go and empty out the truck to go swap back when the phone rang. Pat was wondering if I fancied going in again.
Erm, not really but.....
OK then, pick up in Winnipeg and drive in overnight so they can get to you nice and early.
Nice and early in Indian time is about 8am if you can get them out of bed. I was held up in the city so didn't get away until 7pm, and arrived in the Reserve at about 4am. The road was mush. It was just below freezing so the puddles were splashing up over the front of the truck, and when I got to the lakeshore I was a little disconcerted as I had to swing wide to the right and avoid a couple of holes.
I was empty by 9am and came down to the lakeshore again. By now it had got worse. I didn't enjoy trying to drive onto it.
This is the road in daylight.
Anyway, I get the wooden spoon for being the last one fool enough to go into the bush for this season. Pat has promised me a gold star but I have my doubts about that so I shall be spraying my shovel gold as a trophy to myself.
Still and all, I suppose I have proved we expats are not chickens.
