Volvo introduces 4th-generation hybrid solution
The Volvo Group is now introducing the fourth-generation hybrid solution on a broad front in buses, trucks and construction equipment. Our hybrid solution for heavy vehicles is completely different from anything that has existed in the market to date, says Leif Johansson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Volvo Group. As a result of our volumes and resources, we have succeeded in developing a more standardized platform solution, which is a prerequisite for the hybrid technology s ability to have a widespread commercial impact in the market for heavy vehicles."

Volvo has been testing various types of hybrid solutions since the 1980s and Volvo Group unveiled the first commercially viable hybrid solution for heavy vehicles in March 2006. Volvo s solution is based on a concept known as I-SAM (Integrated Starter, Alternator Motor). This solution entails that an electric motor and a diesel engine work in parallel, whereby each of them can be used in the areas where they are most effective. This increases the capacity compared with series hybrids, while reducing fuel consumption and improving driving characteristics simultaneously.

Fourth generation
This is what we call the fourth-generation hybrid technology, says Leif Johansson. In a few years time, hybrid technology will no longer be a special solution but a technology found in most new city buses and distribution trucks. The fourth-generation hybrid technology has the potential to make such a development possible.

The favorable commercial prospects for the Volvo Group s hybrid technology derive from the fact that it is based on a platform solution containing a large number of standard components. The solutions that have existed in the market to date, and that the Volvo Group itself has been offering, have been based on a large proportion of special components. This has impeded volume manufacturing and led to the vehicles becoming much more expensive than the equivalent standard vehicles. Another advantage generated from an adaptable platform solution, such as the one that the Volvo Group has access to, is that it can be used for a variety of different products and applications, which further increases the volumes and reduces production costs.

Volvo believes that the prospects are favorable for developing hybrid technology for all heavy vehicle segments, everything from buses and construction equipment to trucks for distribution and long-haul traffic, adds the Volvo President and CEO.

TDG wins European contract from consumer electronics giant PDF Print E-mail

UK-based European logistics service provider TDG yesterday (September 18) announced it had secured a contract from VTech to operate its continental Europe end-to-end supply chain over the next three years. The latter is said to be one of the world's largest suppliers of corded and cordless phones.

TDG said the winning of that of €25m contract, which followed a "successful" year-long supply chain re-engineering project, covered the coordination of freight forwarding to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from VTech's manufacturing plants in Hong Kong and the transfer of goods from port to TDG's warehouses in that European country. Operational execution was based at TDG's platform in Nijmegen and VTech's platform in Weert, south of Eindhoven. From those locations TDG distributed to VTech's Benelux, German, French and Spanish markets.

"Our products have been so well received in the marketplace that our old route to market didn't have the capacity to meet the demand," explained Gilles Sautier, European CEO of VTech. "TDG's re-engineering project increased our capacity and helped us realise how we could improve our delivery performance."

TDG stated that in addition to organising the goods flow from manufacturer to large retail chains across Europe, it also provided value-added services such as customisation, reconfiguration and repackaging.

"We undertook a rapid four-week implementation last summer just before the start of VTech's peak season and, despite its complexity, have had services up and running successfully since then," said Tijmen Muijs, managing director TDG Benelux.

UK grain business appoints DHL as logistics partner PDF Print E-mail

DHL Exel Supply Chain reported this week that it had been appointed supply chain partner to Openfield, the planned new merged business of Grainfarmers and Centaur Grain in the UK.

In a five-year contract said to be worth around £125m (€154m), DHL said it would be using its logistics expertise to work with existing grain carriers to establish a more efficient supply chain. "This appointment comes after three years of collaboration between the companies, looking into ways that the existing supply chain could be streamlined to counter increasing operating costs and growing food costs."

During that collaboration, continued DHL, DHL Exel Supply Chain had been able to draw on its knowledge and technological expertise gained from improving supply chain efficiencies in other industries, such as automotive and construction, to develop a best practice model for the transportation of grain in the UK.

"Through trials with both Grainfarmers and Centaur Grain and one of their key food processing customers, this best practice model has already demonstrated significant improvements in supply chain efficiency," claimed DHL. "When applied across the two businesses, DHL expects there to be up to a 10% reduction in food miles and a saving of 2,500 tonnes of CO2 per annum, achieved through greater collaboration and forward planning."

DHL, part of German global logistics group Deutsche Post World Net, said DHL Exel Supply Chain would now be putting that model into practice across all Openfield's grain logistics operations, covering 120,000 grain movements each year. From the DHL Exel Supply Chain control tower at Openfield's headquarters in Colsterworth, Lincolnshire, eastern England, DHL would use technology to order, plan and optimise grain movements whilst also managing payments and providing delivery confirmation and support services.
