Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) has split DHL Logistics into two separate operating units.

Frank Appel, new chairman and CEO of DPWN, has appointed Bruce Edwards to head up DHL Supply Chain and Hermann Ude to take charge of DHL Global Forwarding and Freight.

Appel said: "Having a dedicated CEO for each of the logistics businesses on the executive board will further strengthen both businesses. Collaboration will be of prime importance, which is above all in the interest of customers." DPWN said the move was a structural one "without any immediate costs or gains".

DHL had denied rumours it was planning to split up express, freight forwarding and logistics.

In November, Appel said customers were "demanding more integration, not less" from their service providers.

Deutsche Post has lost some US$2.8bn in the US market over the past four years, according to a new report from investment bank Bear Stearns.

The group’s annual report shows a 17% decline in revenue for the Express Americas division last year to €3.2bn ($4.9bn). One industry analyst suggested DHL may scale down its operations and outsource in the US where possible.
