The UK's Border Immigration Agency is urging more European hauliers to sign up to its accreditation scheme.

Last year 17,877 stowaways were found trying to enter the UK illegally, and only 1,000 hauliers have so far signed up to the Civil Penalty Accreditation Scheme, which encourages hauliers to avoid fines should illegal stowaways be found on-board.
Sandra Baker, an inspector with HM Government Civil Penalty Central Administration Unit, said the maximum fine levied on transport providers was £2,000 per "clandestine" found, and said if hauliers wanted to avoid these, they had to show they had implemented all the necessary precautions to secure their vehicles.
