A service station with parking for 240 lorries could be built on the A43 to cater for travellers passing through Corby. The former Fircroft nursery and garden centre, between Stanion and Weldon, could become home to the station, which would include a 60-bedroom hotel, filling station for cars and HGVs, a restaurant and pub and an HGV drivers' rest area containing a cafe, toilets, showers and 240 lorry parking spaces. The applicants say it will fill a need for lorry parking in Corby to ease recent problems at Long Croft Road. But locals are concerned that more trees will be removed to make way for the development. A similar but smaller application was originally passed by planners at Corby Council in 1997, but work was never started. The latest application is by Sywell Land which is represented by agents Smith Stuart Reynolds. Lorry park plans for 240 vehicles near Corby Planner Laura Tilston said: "The lorry park will be a secure facility for drivers and their trucks. One of the reasons we have put the application in is because there is a countywide problem with lorry parking. "There is an existing problem on Long Croft Road and we know the lorry park in Pilot Road has now been shut. There is generally a complete lack of facilities in the area. "We have spoken to the police and the council's liaison officer regarding crime prevention issues." Miss Tilston said trees cut down would be part of a Forestry Commission programme to clear several areas of woodland. She said: "There will be trees surrounding the site to act as a screen." Joy Smith, who has lived in Stanion for 50 years, said: "It's horrendous. Where on earth are they going to put 240 HGVs without cutting down trees? "Very soon this village is going to be surrounded by nothing but industrial estates and car parks." Stanion councillor Stan Heggs said: "I am very concerned we preserve our woodlands.
