The Netherlands, along with Flanders and Wallonia, wishes to introduce an ‘intelligent’ electronic tax on distances covered, by 2011

The system would function through the American GPS system while waiting for the European Galileo system to come on line in 2012. The Flemish government has declared itself favourable to this tax and would like it to come into force simultaneously across the Benelux. The Minister President of the Walloon region, Rudy Demotte, also finds the formula acceptable. Michel Daerden had indicated a preference for a motorway disc, but the Walloon government is not opposing a system based on distances covered. Belgium already uses a Euro-vignette along with Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. This is therefore set to disappear, and the Belgian vignette will never see light of day.
