A former truckstop in Alconbury, which closed last August, could be revived providing a buyer views it as commercially viable.

The RHA claims there is a "huge need" for the Alconbury truckstop to reopen. Martin Dean, RHA spokesman, says he is certain the 200-truck capacity, 10-acre site off the A14 in Cambridgeshire could be commercially viable. "I hope it will be bought by a truckstop operator as I believe the demand is there," says Dean. "There is still a huge need for it along the A14 corridor and common sense says it must be able to make money. "There is certainly a real demand for suitable truck parking facilities, not just in Cambridgeshire, but nati-onally."

Huntingdonshire District Council is currently looking at setting up a Cambridgeshire-wide lorry parking forum involving councils, MPs and LGV operators. It follows concerns expressed by residents and businesses along the A14 about the number of trucks parking in streets, laybys and indus-trial estates. A recent review by the council concluded there was little that it could do "in    isolation", but that there was an "urgent need for a national strategy".
