A lorry was hijacked by bogus police officers on the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire and stripped of its £250,000 cargo, police said.
The driver of the Mercedes heavy good vehicle stopped after a white Volvo car with blue flashing lights pulled him over on the road. He was then driven off in the Volvo before being left tied to a metal gate on a road off the A628 Woodhead Pass. The lorry was found burnt out and empty on Stripe Road, Doncaster. South Yorkshire Police said the lorry load included electrical items. The 35-year-old driver, from West Yorkshire, was stopped on the hard shoulder of the southbound exit slip road at junction 36 at Hoyland on Tuesday evening, police said. 'Well planned' A man wearing a police uniform and high visibility jacket with 'Police' written on the front and back asked him to hand over documents and go and sit in the Volvo. The car was then driven away be two men, also in police uniform. The Volvo was later found burnt out on the Woodhead Pass. The lorry driver was found uninjured nearby. Det Sgt Keith Evans said: "It seems to have been very well planned and was obviously executed very well. "We are making inquiries at the moment to find out who the Volvo was registered to before the incident." Witnesses or people with information are being asked to contact South Yorkshire Police. |
