False lorry floor hid E10m in drugs PDF Print E-mail

A dutch man was being questioned by gardaí in Co Wexford last night following the seizure of cannabis resin with an estimated street value of E10 million.

More than 1,400kg of the drug were discovered by Customs officers during a search of an articulated lorry that arrived at Rosslare Europort on Wednesday.

The Dutch-registered vehicle had travelled from the Netherlands via England. It contained a consignment of potted plants which were destined for a business address in Co Cork.

Customs officials identified the articulated truck as potentially suspicious using risk profiling, having examined the freight list for the passenger ferry.

The cannabis was detected by Customs and Excise sniffer dog Dillon, and an extensive search of the lorry uncovered the drug, which had been concealed in a false floor in the refrigerated trailer.

Customs officers brought in cutting equipment yesterday to get to the drugs, which had been stowed away in steel compartments and then hidden beneath the false wooden floor.

The 42-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested under section two of the Drug Trafficking Act. He was held last night at Wexford Garda station.

The haul was the largest seizure of cannabis at Rosslare.

It follows an E8 million cannabis discovery at the harbour in April.

The discovery brings the value of cannabis discovered this year by Dillon to over E18 million.
