A lorry driver has been killed in a crash on the M40, closing the motorway in both directions on the border of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

The crash, which involved two lorries in the early hours in freezing conditions, has shut all lanes between junctions six and four at High Wycombe.

The lorry driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

One lorry shed its load - believed to be lard - causing slippery conditions and delays in the High Wycombe area.

The Highways Agency estimated the crash could take five hours to clear.

Diversions have been set up on the A40 but a lorry has jack-knifed on that road causing further problems, a Buckinghamshire County Council spokesperson said.

She added that the county's highways contractors had gritted its principle road network, including the A40, up to three times overnight.

The Oxford Bus Company says it is managing to maintain its services to London, Heathrow and Gatwick, although it warns there may be some delays.

The express and the airline services are travelling via Aylesbury and the A41. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journey.
