THIEVES who stole a bus from a depot abandoned it on a canal towpath after it toppled over.

Police suspect joyriders are to blame for taking the single-decker number 625 from the First depot in Melverley Street in Wigan town centre around 3am yesterday.

It is unclear how the vehicle ended up leaning against a fence on the towpath of the Leeds-Liverpool canal behind B&Q half-a-mile away.

Passers-by say it looked like the driver decided to reverse the bus when it could go no further along the towpath before it slipped down a small grass embankment and toppled against a fence.

Police were called to the scene and arranged for the bus to be moved as it was in danger of crashing through the fence and hurting passers-by

M.E.N reader Keith Mullender, who sent us this picture, said: "I understand that the bus had been driven onto the towpath through a gate a couple of hundred yards back... and had quickly reached a point along the path that it could not get through and tried to reverse back."

Robert Mason, Wigan operations director at First, said: "One of our single deck vehicles was stolen from our depot in Wigan at approximately 3.30am (yesterday) morning. The bus was found soon after on the embankment of the canal near B&Q.

"It appears that on attempting to drive the bus along the canal towpath it has become stuck between the embankment and the towpath itself.

"We were unable to recover the vehicle ourselves and had to seek assistance from a special recovery unit who managed to recover the bus at approximately 2.30pm.

"We have reported this incident to the police and we will be assisting them with their investigation into this theft."
