Leggett's Transport's DC in Bury St Edmunds has been recognised as an official truck park by Suffolk County Council. The haulage firm has been allowing operators that it knows to park up overnight at its site for some time, but since the start of the year, it has thrown open its doors to the rest of the industry. It is now listed as one of six official truck parks in Suffolk.
Barry Hynard, operations manager at Leggett's, tells MT: "We currently have space for 30 trucks a night between Monday and Thursday, while our own vehicles are out on the road."
Located by junction 47 of the A14, Hynard says Leggett's base is an ideal spot for a truck park. He explains: "It's 100% secure, as it is completely land-locked and only has one way in and one way out. We also have CCTV, large iron gates that are locked each night, and an entry barrier."
Leggett's charges £10 a night for one-off stop-offs, and £8 a night for regulars. Showers and toilets are on site, while the nearest village is just a mile away for food.
The firm says it has a spare 10-12 acres of land at its site that it's considering developing. "We'd like to develop the large field at the back of our DC into a bigger truck parking facility, probably for around 150 vehicles. We're currently in the process of drawing up plans for this and aim to submit them in the next few months," says Hynard.
