A 24-hour truck stop could be built to give lorry drivers somewhere safe and secure to park.
Kettering Council has received a planning application for the facility, which would include a petrol station and service building on land off Orton Road near Rothwell.

And a study has found more lorry parks are needed to stop Northamptonshire becoming known as a centre for HGV crime – it has been suggested thieves are travelling to the county to target lorries that are not parked securely.

Hauliers have welcomed plans for a truck stop.

Adam Smith from BSI Transport said: "I think it's a great idea, drivers need to stop at any time of the day and night, so a 24-hour service is ideal.

"A lot of trucks park in the laybys simply because there is nowhere else to stop off, so to have a specifically designated area is great.

"It will also stop lorries from parking in industrial estates or round the back of residential areas.

"It will also reduce crime rates, there have been several occurrences of theft from lorries parked on the side of the road, and a truck stop would be more than likely deter this."

The Northamptonshire HGV Parking Study revealed earlier this year that up to three new lorry parks are required in the county, with at least one on the A14 and one on the A45.

Deputy leader of Kettering Council Alison Wiley said: "This has been a concern and the issue has been brought up before.

"Residents and businesses don't want lorries parking in areas which are not suitable and the lorry drivers want somewhere secure where they can leave their lorries."

Northamptonshire County Council says up to 1,000 lorries park on the roads in the county each night.

The nearest secure lorry park to Northamptonshire is at Junction 18 of the M1 at Rugby.

About 16,000 lorries a day use the A14 in both directions in Northamptonshire, an estimated 6,000 lorries use the A45 in both directions and about 7,000 lorries use the A43.
