The UK police has teamed up with a vehicle tracking company to combat the growing problem of truck crime. The Association of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (Avcis) is working with Cobra UK, a provider of vehicle tracking systems to combat freight theft. Avcis has launched a "sting trailer", a lorry rigged with Cobra's specialist vehicle tracking system to catch thieves red-handed. The average loss of each incident of road freight crime is around £25,000 (US$36,500), and Avcis said the potential reward for criminals far exceeds the risks involved. The custom-built system works using a covert tracking system that allows the police to constantly monitor the trailer. It also includes hidden cameras with night vision, as well as automatic intrusion alerts that can be sent to mobile phones. It said that the video footage is admissible in court as supporting evidence. "Freight theft is an extremely costly problem, " said detective chief inspector Paul Lambotte, Avcis' head of unit. "The crimes are organised, increasingly violent and marketdriven. Professional criminals are happy to travel the length and breadth of the country to target vehicles and their loads." Source IFW |
