NOON: Police are investigating the murder of a nine-year-old girl whose body was discovered yesterday afternoon (Saturday) near Peterborough.
The grim discovery was made in the cab of a lorry parked at the Jet service station, on the A605, near Warmington.

The body of a man was also discovered shortly afterwards. It was hanged in woodland close to the scene where the girl's body was found.

Neither the girl nor the man have been named at this stage as all family members have not been informed.

It is believed there are no suspicious circumstances in relation to the man's death, but police are have not completely ruled out the involvement of a third party.

Both bodies were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for forensic post mortems to be carried out.

The initial cause of death for the girl has been given as strangulation, for the man it is death by hanging.

Senior investigator Detective Chief Inspector Tricia Kirk, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are investigating the murder of a young girl and the death of a man who was known to her.

"While we have not at this stage ruled out the possible involvement of a third party, the evidence strongly suggests that it is unlikely that anyone else is involved in the two deaths.

"This is a tragic incident for two families and we are working closely with them as part of our investigation.
